Elif Shafak Confirmed for Forging Forward Conference

Elif Shafak has been confirmed to join the line-up of speakers at this year’s inaugural BolognaBookPlus (BBPlus), the general trade arm of the acclaimed Bologna Children’s Book Fair, taking place next week from 14-17 June. 

The award-winning British-Turkish novelist will be in conversation with President of the International Publishers Association (IPA) Bodour Al Qasimi as part of Monday’s headline conference Forging Forward (14th June, 9:15- 6:00pm CEST), which will welcome over 30 speakers from 25 countries to discuss challenges facing the global industry and ideas for moving forward after the pandemic.

Speakers already confirmed for the programme include Professor Patrizio Bianchi, Minister of Public Education, Chair of Hay Festival Caroline MichelBarbara Schuer from Penguin Random House Germany, Wattpad’s Allen Lau and Kumuriwor Alira Bushiratu from Learners Girls Foundation. Forging Forward ticket holders will also have access to six additional On Demand events and webinars including Accessibility in Publishing, a look at the significant financial and legal implications of the 2025 European Accessibility Act, and an executive round table with CEOs Hakan Rudels, Bonnier Sweden; Chantal Restivo-Alessi, HarperCollins USA; Roberto Banchik Penguin Random House Mexico, and Louise Sherwin-Stark.

About Elif Shafak
Elif Shafak is an award-winning British-Turkish novelist. She writes in both Turkish and English, and has published 19 books, 12 of which are novels. Her work has been translated into 55 languages. Her latest novel 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and RSL Ondaatje Prize; and chosen Blackwell’s Book of the Year. Her previous novel, The Forty Rules of Love was chosen by BBC among 100 Novels that Shaped Our World. Shafak holds a PhD in political science and she has taught at various universities in Turkey, the US and the UK, including St Anne's College, Oxford University, where she is an honorary fellow.

Shafak is a Fellow and a Vice President of the Royal Society of Literature. She is a member of Weforum Global Agenda Council on Creative Economy and a founding member of ECFR (European Council on Foreign Relations). An advocate for women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights and freedom of speech, Shafak is an inspiring public speaker and twice TED Global speaker. Shafak contributes to major publications around the world and she was awarded the medal of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2017 she was chosen by Politico as one of the twelve people “who will give you a much needed lift of the heart”.
