Wellcome Book Prize 2016 opens for submissions

The submission process for the Wellcome Book Prize 2016 is now open. Publishers are asked to submit books published between 1 January and 31 December 2015 by the official deadline, 4 September 2015. FMcM Associates will again handle the PR and administration of the prize.

Worth £30,000, the prize celebrates the best new books that engage with some aspect of medicine, health or illness, showcasing the breadth and depth of our encounters with medicine through exceptional works of fiction and non-fiction. The Iceberg by Marion Coutts won this year’s award, with a judging panel chaired by the acclaimed writer, Bill Bryson.

“The Wellcome Book Prize 2015 shortlist and winner proved once again what a diverse segment of contemporary literature the Prize celebrates, blending fact and fiction that spotlight the human experience at the heart of medicine in a variety of different ways. The 2015 Prize had a large impact at events and bookshops across the country, boosted by partnerships with the Reading Agency, Booksellers Association and Hay Festival. We’re excited to build on this momentum into 2016 and very much look forward to seeing what publishers will submit.”

To be eligible for entry, a book should have a central theme that engages with some aspect of medicine, health or illness and can include biography, crime, current affairs, history, popular science, romance and science fiction. UK publishers or imprints can submit up to three books scheduled for publication within the designated period.
 
The judges for the 2016 Prize will be announced in the autumn. The Wellcome Book Prize will shortlist six books in February 2016 and the winner will be announced in April 2016.
